06 — From The Beach

Can You See Whales From Shore On Maui?

Yes — and on this coast you barely have to try. The Auʻau Channel starts a few hundred yards off the sand, which is exactly why our raft is among the whales minutes after leaving the beach instead of an hour later. Go early while the water is still flat, take binoculars, and look for the spout before you look for the whale: a fifteen-foot column of mist is far easier to catch than a back.

We would rather tell you where to stand than pretend the view from land is nothing. Four stretches we would send a guest to, all of them within a short drive of Kaʻanapali:

Kaʻanapali Beach Walk

The paved path between Hanakaʻoʻo Beach Park and Kahekili Beach Park — the same water our boat leaves from. Flat, easy, and walkable with a coffee in your hand.

Puʻu Kekaʻa — Black Rock

The headland at the north end of Kaʻanapali Beach. Height is what matters from land, and this is the nearest thing to elevation you get without driving.

Kapalua Coastal Trail

Further up the coast, above the water for most of its length. Quieter than the resort stretch, and the sight lines down the channel are long.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway lookouts

Papawai Point and McGregor Point, signed on the drive in from Māʻalaea. They look straight down the middle of the channel from a couple of hundred feet up, and they are where most people who say they saw whales from the road actually saw them.

And what the boat adds

From the sandYou are looking for a spout — a fifteen-foot column of mist — and reading a shape at a mile.

From the boatFederal rules stop us at 100 yards. The whales close that themselves, often with our engines off, and then it is an animal longer than the boat you are sitting in.

From the sandWhale song is entirely underwater. From the sand there is nothing to hear.

From the boatThe hydrophone broadcasts through the vessel. In February and March the channel is loud.

From the sandA breach at distance is a splash. What it was, and why, is anyone’s guess.

From the boatA certified naturalist names the behaviour as it happens — whose calf that is, what the pod is doing, why the tail came down like that.

07 — Your Morning

How A Morning On The Water Actually Goes

The first trip of the day leaves at 7:00 AM from Kaʻanapali Beach, behind Whalers Village, and it is the one to take. Here is the whole sequence, so that nothing about the morning has to be a surprise.

  1. 01

    Before you leave

    Take the first departure of the day if you can. The channel between Maui and Lānaʻi is flattest before the trade winds build, and flat water is the difference between spotting a spout and missing it. Use the facilities at the mall on your way through — there is no restroom on the boat.

  2. 02

    Parking

    The Whalers Village structure, a short walk from the sand. It is not validated, so budget for it, and give yourself longer than you think at peak season: the car park fills before the beach does.

  3. 03

    Checking in

    On the beach behind Whalers Village. No dock, no terminal, no queue inside a building — our crew finds you on the sand and the whole thing takes a couple of minutes.

  4. 04

    Getting aboard

    A shuttle boat runs you out from the beach to the vessel, so there is no wading and no surf to climb through. Then a safety briefing before anybody goes anywhere.

  5. 05

    On the water

    The whale ground starts a few hundred yards out, so the transit is minutes rather than the best part of an hour. Full shade overhead, the hydrophone in the water, and a naturalist talking you through whatever the morning turns out to give you.

  6. 06

    Coming back

    Onto the same sand you left from. Off the earliest trip that puts you at breakfast with the whole day still ahead of you. The ride is livelier than a big catamaran, which is the trade you make for the size and the speed.
